Take aways
- Why we collect: to gather information about the world, to preserve the past, and to follow our interests and desires. For some, it is a lifelong pursuit.
- The Presidential Oath of Office: I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of president of the United States, and will to the best of my ability preserve, protect and defend the constitution of the United States.
- Medal of Honor: The Medal of Honor was created in 1861 to give recognition to men who distinguished themselves “conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity” in combat with an enemy of the United States. The Medal of Honor is the Country’s highest military honor. On July 25, 1963, Congress established a set of guidelines under which the Medal of Honor could be awarded: while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States, while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force, or while serving with friendly forces engaged in armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party. More than 3,500 medals have been awarded. Of those, 1,522 were awarded during the Civil Wars.
- Washington Monument: Workers completed the Washington Monument in 1884. At the time, it was the world’s tallest building.
